FAQ
About D GEMZ
D GEMZ is a multi-generational jewellery house built on five generations of experience in gemstones, jewellery manufacturing, custom work, and the jewellery trade. Our roots began in natural gemstones and collector material before expanding into custom diamond jewellery, bridal, bespoke commissions, moissanite, and carefully selected silver jewellery. Today, D GEMZ serves both retail and trade clients while maintaining the same central philosophy across every category: strong materials, thoughtful engineering, careful finishing, and jewellery we are comfortable standing behind.
The Vault by D GEMZ is our dedicated custom and fine jewellery division. It focuses on bespoke engagement rings, natural diamond jewellery, bridal pieces, men's jewellery, custom pendants, grillz, gemstone creations, statement pieces, and one-of-one commissions. The Vault also develops house-exclusive designs rather than relying solely on mass-market catalogue settings. Each project is approached with attention to proportion, structure, stone selection, durability, and finishing.
The Moissanite Vault is our dedicated moissanite division, created to bring the same design philosophy and finishing standards used throughout D GEMZ into a different gemstone category. Rather than treating moissanite as a lower-standard product, we focus on carefully selected stones, Vault-exclusive designs, proper construction, and refined finishing. The gemstone may change. The standard does not.
Each division allows us to speak clearly to a different type of jewellery while keeping the wider D GEMZ identity cohesive. D GEMZ is the parent house and represents our overall heritage in gemstones, jewellery, retail, and trade. The Vault by D GEMZ represents bespoke, fine, and design-led custom jewellery. The Moissanite Vault specializes in moissanite jewellery developed with the same emphasis on design and finishing. They are not unrelated businesses. They are different expressions of the same house.
Because quality and price category are not the same thing. A collector gemstone, natural diamond engagement ring, moissanite piece, and sterling silver item serve very different purposes and budgets. We do not believe they need to pretend to be the same product. What should remain consistent is the care taken in selecting, manufacturing, finishing, and representing them accurately. Our goal is not to make every piece equally expensive. It is to make sure every category has a standard behind it.
The materials and price category are naturally different, but the philosophy is consistent. Our silver collection is intended to offer customers dependable, well-finished jewellery at an accessible level rather than treating silver as an afterthought. We focus on pieces we are comfortable selling under the D GEMZ name, with proper construction, clean finishing, and honest representation of the material.
Many pieces produced through The Vault and The Moissanite Vault are developed as house-exclusive designs. Some custom projects are created specifically for one client, while others become part of our wider design language or permanent collection. If exclusivity is important for a particular commission, it should be discussed during the design process.
From the Forge represents the story and philosophy behind D GEMZ. It refers not only to the physical making of jewellery, but to the generations of experience, trade relationships, technical challenges, gemstone knowledge, and continual refinement that shaped the house. Our business has changed considerably over five generations. The standard was forged along the way.
Custom Jewellery
Yes. Custom jewellery has been part of our business for generations. We produce custom engagement rings, wedding bands, diamond jewellery, gemstone pieces, pendants, grillz, men's jewellery, anniversary pieces, redesigns, and fully bespoke commissions. A project may begin with a reference image, sketch, existing gemstone, heirloom piece, or simply an idea. From there, the design is refined around the intended look, materials, proportions, wearability, and structural requirements of the finished piece.
Yes. Inspiration images are useful for communicating proportion, style, setting type, and overall direction. We generally use them as a starting point rather than treating them as instructions for a direct copy. Where appropriate, we refine the design to improve structure, proportions, wearability, stone placement, and finishing while preserving the elements the client originally liked. We can also develop an entirely original design for clients looking for something unique to D GEMZ.
Yes. Engagement and bridal jewellery are an important part of our custom work. We create natural diamond, lab-grown diamond, gemstone, and moissanite engagement rings in a wide range of styles, including solitaires, hidden halos, three-stone rings, cathedral settings, side-stone designs, eternity styles, and fully custom concepts. We can also create matching wedding bands and complete bridal sets around the engagement ring.
Yes. We produce both traditional and fully custom wedding bands. Options include plain precious-metal bands, diamond bands, eternity bands, channel-set designs, gemstone bands, matched bridal sets, men's wedding bands, and technically complex custom pieces. We pay particular attention to comfort, thickness, proportion, durability, and how the band interacts with an engagement ring when the two are intended to be worn together.
Yes. Custom grillz are available through The Vault. Grillz require more than simply casting a decorative piece. Fit, anatomy, comfort, thickness, symmetry, surface finishing, and stone placement all need to be considered carefully. Options can range from clean precious-metal designs to fully stone-set custom work.
Yes. The Vault produces custom pendants, diamond pieces, initials, symbols, logos, personal motifs, chains, and statement jewellery. These projects are engineered according to their scale and intended wear. Larger pieces may require careful planning around weight distribution, bail construction, articulation, stone layout, and the relationship between the pendant and chain.
Yes. Complex manufacturing is one of the areas in which our background is particularly valuable. Our work can include precision channel setting, custom-cut gemstone layouts, highly stone-set pieces, delicate natural gemstones, unusual proportions, complex galleries, and designs requiring tight tolerances. For example, channel-setting step-cut natural emeralds demands far more care than ordinary diamond setting because emerald is naturally more brittle and less tolerant of pressure. Pieces like these require the design, cutting, and setting process to work together from the beginning.
Our finishing standard comes from years of making jewellery for both retail clients and other jewellers. We look beyond the visible top surface of a piece. Stone alignment, prong formation, channels, side profiles, galleries, undersides, transitions, polish, symmetry, comfort, and structural integrity all contribute to the final result. Our approach is simple: a piece should still look properly made when examined closely and from angles that are rarely photographed.
Yes. Existing jewellery can often be redesigned, rebuilt, or incorporated into a new piece. Depending on the condition and materials, we may be able to reuse gemstones, diamonds, or precious metal from the original jewellery. Every project is evaluated individually because older stones and settings can have limitations that need to be considered before work begins.
Diamonds
Yes. We regularly create jewellery using natural diamonds, including engagement rings, wedding bands, anniversary jewellery, pendants, earrings, men's pieces, and custom commissions. Stone selection can be tailored to the client's priorities, whether those are size, cut quality, colour, clarity, rarity, overall appearance, or budget.
Yes. Lab-grown diamonds are available for clients who prefer them. Our manufacturing and finishing standards do not change based on whether a piece contains natural or lab-grown diamonds. The choice primarily concerns the gemstone itself, budget, and the client's personal preference.
Gemstones
Yes. Natural gemstones are at the foundation of D GEMZ. We work with sapphires, rubies, emeralds, garnets, tourmalines, cat's eyes, and many other coloured stones, ranging from everyday jewellery material to fine and unusual collector stones. Because our background began in gemstones, we place particular emphasis on colour, character, cutting, durability, treatment disclosure, and how the individual stone should influence the final design.
Yes. D GEMZ maintains a particular interest in gemstones with unusual or exceptional characteristics. Collector material may be selected for exceptional colour, optical phenomena, origin, rarity, size, cutting potential, unusual inclusions, or other characteristics that distinguish the stone from ordinary commercial material. Availability varies because genuinely interesting natural gemstones cannot simply be reordered from a catalogue.
Yes. In many cases, designing around an existing stone produces a stronger result than forcing the gemstone into a pre-existing mounting. We assess the stone's dimensions, shape, durability, orientation, and condition before developing a design that suits both the gemstone and the intended style of the piece.
Some natural gemstones may be treated, as is common throughout the jewellery industry, while others may be untreated. Treatment status is disclosed where known and relevant. Because treatments can have a major effect on rarity and value, we believe they should be represented accurately rather than hidden behind vague marketing terminology.
Many diamonds and significant gemstones can be supplied with reports from recognized gemological laboratories where appropriate. The usefulness of a laboratory report depends on the type, value, and nature of the stone, so not every piece of jewellery necessarily requires one. Any available documentation relating to a particular stone will be disclosed during the purchase process.
Yes. We can source diamonds and coloured gemstones according to a range of requirements, including shape, measurements, colour, clarity, treatment, origin, rarity, and budget. For unusual natural gemstones, sourcing can take longer because our goal is to find the right stone rather than simply the first one that technically satisfies a specification.
Process & Timeline
Most custom projects require approximately four weeks after the final design has been approved, although timing varies depending on complexity, gemstone sourcing, custom cutting, and the amount of handwork required. Highly technical or unusual commissions may require additional time. Rush production may be available for certain projects, subject to feasibility and additional charges.
A deposit is required before custom production begins. The exact amount depends on the project, materials, and scope of work and will be confirmed before production. Because custom jewellery is manufactured specifically for the client and may involve specially sourced stones or non-recoverable labour, deposits and custom-order payments may be subject to different terms from ordinary in-stock purchases.
Yes. The design stage exists specifically to refine the piece before manufacturing begins. Reasonable revisions can be made while the project remains within the approved concept and before production has started. Once manufacturing begins, changes may require additional labour, new components, or a complete remake and may therefore involve additional charges.
Gemological and appraisal services are provided separately through our professional appraisal and laboratory operations. These services are kept distinct from ordinary jewellery sales where independence or formal valuation is required. Contact us for current appraisal services, turnaround times, and submission requirements.
Yes. Wholesale and trade manufacturing have been an important part of the D GEMZ story. Our family has extensive experience producing custom jewellery for other jewellers, including pieces ultimately sold under other businesses or presented to their own clients. Trade work helped shape our standards because jewellery made for another professional is judged very differently from jewellery viewed only across a retail counter. Wholesale and trade inquiries are welcome.
Wholesale arrangements are available for qualifying jewellery businesses and trade clients. Pricing depends on the type of work, volume, materials, complexity, and required services. Trade accounts can contact us directly to discuss their requirements.
Visiting & Shopping
Yes. Clients are welcome to visit us in-store to view jewellery, discuss custom projects, examine gemstones, compare options, and speak with our team directly. For more involved custom work or gemstone consultations, arranging an appointment is recommended so that adequate time can be reserved for the project.
An appointment is not required for ordinary retail visits, but it is recommended for custom consultations, significant gemstone purchases, bridal appointments, trade discussions, and projects requiring detailed design work.
Yes. We can work with clients beyond Toronto and accommodate many parts of the custom process remotely. Depending on the project, consultations, design approvals, stone selection, and updates can be completed digitally, with secure shipping or collection arrangements organized separately.
D GEMZ is based in the Greater Toronto Area, with deep roots in Toronto's jewellery trade and downtown diamond district. Our history within the local wholesale and custom manufacturing community continues to influence the way we approach both private clients and professional jewellers today.
